Just now while watching the CBC News, I learned the Pentagon has commanded a U.S. Navy ship will shoot down a failed National Reconnaisance Office spy satellite. We don’t know much about the satellite except it was launched on December 14, 2006, it failed several hours after entering orbit and was apparently designed with the ability for a controlled de-orbit, but since control has been lost, that is not an option ! According to the experts, about half of the 5000-pound satellite would survive atmospheric re-entry. With a full tank of noxious hydrazine rocket fuel aboard (!)
