Moncton is NOT a Metropolitan area!
By definition, Moncton is NOT a metropolitan area. Yet, I continually see Moncton being called "Metro" in the newspaper, and hearing it referred to as "Metro" on the radio. As someone who has lived in Metropolitan Toronto, and Metropolitan London, England all I can do is snicker to myself when I hear of Moncton being referred to as "Metro".
I'm thinking any place you can drive across in less than half an hour couldn't possibly be a "metro".
When my husband was at MAGMA learning French, people there who came from Asia wanted to know where the city was!
To satisfy my curiousity, I just went to Wikipedia and looked it up. The definition is as follows:
"A metropolis is a big city, in most cases with over half a million inhabitants in the city proper, and with a population of at least one million living in its urban agglomeration"
Therefore, Moncton is not "metro".
Perhaps the five letters in metro fit headlines better than the 7 in Moncton; perhaps they fit better than "tri-community area", but while the cynic in me snickers, I would think newspapers have a responsibility to the public to be an example of accuracy in word usage, not to mention grammar and punctuation.
